Entity SEO: helping Google and AI understand your brand: Upscaleads guide
Quick answer

Entity SEO is the practice of helping search engines and AI systems recognise your business as a distinct, well-defined thing, with a clear name, type, location, people, services and relationships. It relies on consistent information across your website and the wider web, structured data and credible references, so your brand is understood and trusted.

Key takeaways

  • Search engines and AI tools think in entities and relationships, not just keywords.
  • Your About page, Organization schema and sameAs links form the foundation.
  • One consistent name, description and set of details everywhere avoids confusion.
  • Independent, credible sources confirm who you are more strongly than your own site.
  • Bilingual brands need one official Arabic name, used consistently.

Search "Emirates" and Google has to work out whether you mean the airline, the seven emirates themselves or the bank Emirates NBD. It usually gets it right, because it understands each as a separate entity with its own attributes and connections.

Smaller businesses rarely get that level of understanding automatically. If your company shares a name with others, has changed name, uses two spellings in Arabic, or simply has little information about it online, search engines and AI tools may be unsure who you are. Entity SEO is how you fix that.

What is an entity in SEO?

An entity is a uniquely identifiable thing, such as a person, organisation, place, product or concept, that search engines can describe with facts and link to other entities. "Upscaleads" is an entity; so are "Dubai", "Al Garhoud" and "search engine optimisation".

Google stores this understanding in its Knowledge Graph, a large database of entities and the relationships between them. When Google shows a knowledge panel with a company's logo, founding date and social profiles, it is showing an entity it recognises. AI assistants form a similar understanding from their training data and from the pages they retrieve.

Why does entity SEO matter for rankings and AI answers?

It matters because modern search matches meaning, not just words. When Google is confident that your business is a specific entity, located in Dubai, offering particular services and associated with recognised experts, it can connect your pages to relevant searches more reliably and show accurate details in results.

For AI answers, the effect is even more direct. An assistant can only recommend a business it can identify and describe with confidence. Brands with thin or conflicting information tend to be left out, confused with a similarly named company, or described with outdated details.

How do you know if Google recognises your brand as an entity?

There are a few quick checks you can run in ten minutes:

  • Search your exact brand name. Is there a knowledge panel on desktop, or a business profile for local businesses?
  • Search your brand plus a service, such as "[brand] web development". Do your own pages dominate?
  • Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity "What is [brand]?" and check whether the description is accurate.
  • Search your name in Arabic. Do results point to your business, or to others?
  • Check whether people or products connected with you, such as founders, doctors or flagship products, are linked back to your business.

A missing knowledge panel is not a failure in itself, since many legitimate businesses do not have one. Inaccurate or confused answers are the bigger warning sign.

How do you build a strong brand entity, step by step?

Work from your own site outwards, making every source say the same thing.

1. Write a canonical brand description

Draft one factual description of 50 to 80 words: legal and trading name, what you do, who for, where, when founded and by whom. Use it, or a close variation, on your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, directories and press materials.

2. Build a proper About page

Include the founding year, leadership, office address, areas served, languages, sectors and any genuine registrations or memberships. This page is the reference point the rest of the web should agree with.

3. Add Organization structured data

Mark up your name, logo, URL, contact details, founders and address using Organization or a relevant LocalBusiness type. Use the sameAs property to list your official profiles, such as LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and relevant directory listings. Our schema markup guide explains the types in more detail.

4. Align every profile and listing

Audit Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, LinkedIn, social profiles and directories. Fix old addresses, former names and inconsistent phone formats.

5. Connect people to the brand

Give key people author or profile pages with their role and expertise, mark them up with Person schema and link them to the organisation. This is especially important for clinics, law firms and consultancies, where expertise is part of what customers are buying.

6. Earn independent references

Coverage in credible publications, industry associations, event listings, partner pages and reputable directories confirms your details from outside. Several consistent independent sources are what move an entity from "claimed" to "trusted". Quality beats volume here: one accurate profile in a respected trade publication does more than dozens of low-quality directory listings.

How do you handle Arabic and English brand names?

Choose one official Arabic name and one official English name, and treat them as a pair everywhere. Many UAE businesses have their name transliterated several ways across trade licences, signage, social media and directories, which splits their identity.

WhereWhat to do
WebsiteShow both names on the About and contact pages; use the Arabic name on Arabic pages.
Structured dataUse the name property for the main name and alternateName for the other language and any common variants.
Map listingsUse the official name, and add the Arabic version where the platform supports it.
Social and directoriesUse the same spellings and link back to the same website.

Can you get a Google knowledge panel for your business?

You cannot request one directly; Google generates knowledge panels when it has enough confidence about an entity. Following the steps above improves the odds. If a panel does appear, you can claim it through Google's verification process by signing in with an account connected to your official website or profiles, which then lets you suggest corrections.

Local businesses usually see their Google Business Profile in the place of a knowledge panel when someone searches their name. For them, a complete, verified profile with the correct category, consistent name and address, and a link to the official website is the most important entity signal of all. Multi-branch businesses should give each branch its own profile and location page, all clearly tied to the parent brand.

Be careful with Wikipedia and Wikidata. They can support entity recognition, but Wikipedia has strict notability and conflict-of-interest rules. Creating a promotional article about your own company is likely to be removed and can damage your reputation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between entity SEO and keyword SEO?

Keyword SEO focuses on matching the words people type, such as "web design Dubai". Entity SEO focuses on helping search engines understand the things behind those words: your business, its location, services, people and relationships. Both matter. Keywords shape individual pages, while entity work makes the whole brand recognisable and trustworthy, which supports rankings, rich results and AI answers.

What does the sameAs property do in schema markup?

The sameAs property lists URLs of other pages that represent the same entity, such as your official LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube or Wikidata entry. It helps search engines confirm that these profiles belong to the organisation described on your website. Only include profiles you control or that genuinely describe your business, and keep the list updated when accounts change.

How long does it take for Google to recognise a new brand?

It varies widely. A new business with a verified Google Business Profile, a clear website, consistent listings and some independent coverage may be recognised within months. A knowledge panel can take much longer and may never appear for some businesses. Consistency and genuine mentions over time matter more than any single technical change.

Why do AI assistants confuse my business with another company?

Usually because the names are similar and the information available does not clearly separate the two. Strengthen the details that distinguish you: location, services, founding year, leadership and official profiles, stated consistently on your site and in structured data. Correct any listings that mix up the businesses, and earn mentions that describe you accurately.
