New to Google Ads? This UAE-focused guide covers the settings that matter most, the mistakes that waste budget and a step-by-step launch checklist.

Google Ads for beginners: a UAE business guide: Upscaleads guide
Quick answer

Google Ads lets UAE businesses show ads on Google Search, YouTube, Maps and partner sites, paying mainly when someone clicks. For beginners, the safest start is one Search campaign targeting a specific emirate, a small set of high-intent keywords, a relevant landing page and conversion tracking for forms, calls and WhatsApp.

Key takeaways

  • Start with a Search campaign; it captures people already looking for what you sell.
  • Set location to 'Presence' so ads only reach people physically in your target area.
  • Use phrase and exact match first, and review search terms every week.
  • Set up conversion tracking before launch, including WhatsApp and call clicks.
  • Keep ownership of your Google Ads account, even if an agency runs it.

Google Ads can put your business in front of someone in Abu Dhabi searching for exactly your service within an hour of going live. It can also spend a month's budget on irrelevant clicks if a few default settings are left untouched. The difference is rarely the budget; it is how the account is set up.

This guide is written for UAE owners and marketing managers running their first campaigns, or taking a closer look at an account someone else set up. It focuses on the decisions that matter most in the first 90 days.

What is Google Ads and how does it work?

Google Ads is Google's advertising platform, covering Search, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, the Display Network and shopping results. You choose where and when ads appear and set a budget; Google runs an auction each time an ad slot is available.

On Search, you bid on keywords. When someone searches a matching term, your ad can appear above or below the organic results. Your position depends on Ad Rank, which weighs your bid alongside ad quality, landing page experience and the expected impact of your ad assets. You usually pay only when someone clicks.

Which campaign type should a beginner start with?

Start with a Search campaign in almost every case. It targets people who are already looking for what you sell, which makes results easier to understand and control.

How do you choose the right keywords?

Pick keywords that show intent to buy or enquire, not just interest in a topic. "AC repair Dubai" and "emergency plumber Sharjah" signal someone ready to call. "How does AC work" does not.

Understand match types

  • Exact match [ac repair dubai]: shows for searches with the same meaning as your keyword. Most control.
  • Phrase match "ac repair dubai": shows for searches that include the meaning of your keyword, possibly with words before or after.
  • Broad match: shows for related searches, including ones that do not contain your words. Powerful with smart bidding and good data, risky without them.

Beginners usually do best with phrase and exact match, a tight list of 15 to 40 keywords per campaign, and a starter list of negative keywords such as jobs, salary, free, course and training.

Think about language

UAE searchers mix English, Arabic and transliterated Arabic. Check whether your audience searches in Arabic, and if so, create separate ad groups or campaigns with Arabic ads and an Arabic landing page rather than mixing languages in one ad.

Which settings matter most for UAE advertisers?

Three settings cause most early waste: location, language and the networks your ads run on.

  • Location options: choose "Presence: people in or regularly in your included locations". The default also includes people showing interest in the location, which can bring clicks from outside the UAE.
  • Location targeting: target the emirates or radius you actually serve. A Dubai-only service does not need Abu Dhabi clicks.
  • Languages: in the UAE, selecting English and Arabic is usually sensible, because the setting reflects the languages people understand, not only the language they search in.
  • Networks: untick the Display Network in Search campaigns. Consider pausing Search partners until you can see how they perform.
  • Ad schedule: if nobody answers calls or WhatsApp after 8pm, limit ads or reduce bids outside working hours. Remember that working hours often shift during Ramadan.

How do you write ads that get clicks?

Match the searcher's words, state a clear benefit and give a reason to act now. Google's responsive search ads let you add up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions, and the system tests combinations.

  • Include the main keyword and location in at least a few headlines, for example "AC Repair in Dubai".
  • Add proof and specifics: same-day visits, years in business, licensed technicians, price starting points if you publish them.
  • Use assets: sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, call assets and, where available, message assets.
  • Send people to a page that matches the ad, not your homepage. Our guide to landing pages that convert ad clicks goes into detail, and if your site cannot support dedicated pages, it may be time to look at website development.

How do you know if your ads are working?

You need conversion tracking, set up before launch, not after. Without it, Google cannot optimise bids and you cannot tell a good campaign from a bad one.

At minimum, track form submissions, clicks on your phone number, clicks on WhatsApp buttons and calls from call assets. For businesses where WhatsApp is the main sales channel, tracking WhatsApp clicks is essential. Once you have volume, importing which leads actually became customers takes you further.

The numbers to watch are conversions, cost per conversion and conversion rate. Clicks and impressions are useful for diagnosis, but they do not pay the bills.

A launch checklist for your first campaign

  1. Create the account with your business email and choose AED as the currency.
  2. Install the Google tag, ideally through Google Tag Manager, and set up conversion actions.
  3. Build one Search campaign for your most profitable service.
  4. Set location to Presence, target only the areas you serve, and exclude the Display Network.
  5. Group keywords into tightly themed ad groups with their own ads.
  6. Add a negative keyword list before launch.
  7. Add sitelinks, callouts and a call asset.
  8. Start with Maximise clicks or manual CPC for a few weeks if you have no conversion data, then move to Maximise conversions once conversions are flowing.
  9. Review search terms weekly for the first month.
  10. Judge results after 60 to 90 days, not after the first week.

Want an experienced hand on your first campaign?

Many business owners run their own campaigns successfully; others prefer to have the foundations built properly and then take over. Our Google Ads management team can do either, and you can book a call to talk through where you are starting from.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run Google Ads myself without an agency?

Yes. Google Ads is self-service and many small UAE businesses run their own accounts. The main risks are default settings that waste money, weak conversion tracking and not reviewing search terms. If you manage it yourself, set aside a few hours each week to check performance, and consider having the setup reviewed by a specialist.

How long does it take for Google Ads to start working?

Ads can start showing within hours of approval, and you may get enquiries on the first day. Getting results you can rely on takes longer: most campaigns need four to twelve weeks of data before bidding stabilises and you can make confident decisions about keywords, budgets and landing pages.

Do I need a website to advertise on Google?

For almost all campaigns you need a landing page that meets Google's destination requirements. Call assets let people phone you straight from the ad, but the page still affects Quality Score and how many people trust you enough to call. A single fast, focused landing page is enough to begin.

Should my ads be in English or Arabic?

It depends on your audience. Many UAE searches are in English, but Arabic search volume is significant for sectors such as government services, healthcare, education and real estate. Check Keyword Planner for both languages, and if Arabic demand exists, create separate Arabic ads and landing pages rather than mixing the two.
