Schema markup: what it is and which types your business needs: Upscaleads guide
Quick answer

Schema markup is structured data added to a web page's code, usually as JSON-LD, that tells search engines exactly what the page describes: a business, a product, an article, an event or a person. It can make pages eligible for rich results and helps Google and AI systems understand your content accurately.

Key takeaways

  • Use JSON-LD, the structured data format Google recommends.
  • Organization or LocalBusiness, BreadcrumbList and Article schema suit almost every business site.
  • Markup must match what visitors can see on the page.
  • Schema improves eligibility for rich results, not rankings directly.
  • Test every template with Google's Rich Results Test before and after launch.

Search engines are good at reading text, but they still have to guess. Is "Al Barsha" part of your address or the name of a service? Is "AED 350" a price, a deposit or a discount? Is the person named on the page your doctor, your founder or a customer?

Schema markup removes the guessing. It is one of the few technical SEO tasks that benefits traditional search, rich results and AI answers at the same time, and it is often missing or broken on UAE business websites, even ones that were expensive to build.

What does schema markup actually do?

Schema markup labels the facts on a page in a vocabulary search engines share, published at Schema.org. Instead of Google inferring that a string of numbers is your phone number, the markup states it: this is a LocalBusiness, this is its telephone, these are its opening hours, this is its geographic location.

That has three practical effects:

  • Rich results: some types make a page eligible for enhanced listings, such as product price and availability, review stars for products, breadcrumbs, event dates and video thumbnails.
  • Clearer understanding: Google can connect your pages to your business entity, your locations and your people with more confidence.
  • Better source material for AI: AI search features draw on the same understanding of entities and facts, so clean, consistent data reduces the chance of wrong details being repeated.

What it does not do is push a page up the rankings by itself. Google has said structured data is not a general ranking factor. It improves how you appear and how accurately you are understood.

Which schema types does your business need?

Most business websites need a small core set, then a few types specific to their sector. Adding every possible type is not the goal. Accurate markup on the right templates is.

Schema typeWhere to use itWhy it matters
OrganizationHome or about pageDefines your brand: name, logo, contact details and official profiles via sameAs.
LocalBusiness (or a subtype)Home, contact and location pagesAddress, phone, hours and coordinates for each branch. Subtypes include Dentist, MedicalClinic, Restaurant and RealEstateAgent.
WebSiteHome pageDeclares the site name Google can show in results.
BreadcrumbListAll inner pagesShows the page's position in your site structure in search results.
Article or BlogPostingBlog and news postsHeadline, author, publish and update dates.
Product with OfferE-commerce product pagesPrice in AED, availability and product reviews.
ServiceService pagesDescribes what you offer and the area served. No dedicated rich result, but it adds clarity.
PersonTeam and author pagesConnects experts, such as doctors or lawyers, to their credentials and content.
Event, JobPosting, VideoObjectWhere relevantEvent dates, job listings and video details.

What about FAQ, HowTo and review schema?

These are the types most often misunderstood, because Google changed how it displays them.

  • FAQPage: since 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for a limited set of well-known, authoritative government and health websites. You can still use FAQ markup to describe genuine question-and-answer content, but most businesses should not expect the expandable FAQ listing in Google.
  • HowTo: Google stopped showing HowTo rich results in 2023.
  • Review stars: businesses cannot get star ratings in search for reviews about themselves that they host on their own site, known as self-serving reviews for LocalBusiness and Organization. Product reviews on an online store are a different case and remain eligible.

Any agency still selling FAQ schema as a quick route to more space in Google is out of date.

The wider lesson is that rich result eligibility changes over time, while the value of accurate structured data does not. Build markup that describes your business truthfully, and treat any enhanced listing as a bonus rather than the reason for doing it. That way a future display change costs you nothing, because the markup was never there only to chase a feature.

How do you add schema markup to a website?

Use JSON-LD, a block of structured data placed in the page's code that sits separately from the visible HTML. Google recommends it because it is easy to maintain and less error-prone than older formats. The process we follow:

  1. Map templates to types. List each page template (home, service, location, blog post, product) and decide the schema type for each.
  2. Collect the facts once. Official business name, logo URL, trade licence name if different, addresses, phone numbers, WhatsApp number, hours and social profiles. Consistency with your Google Business Profile matters.
  3. Generate markup dynamically. On WordPress, a well-configured SEO plugin covers the basics. Custom sites should output JSON-LD from the same data that fills the page, so prices and hours never fall out of sync.
  4. Handle both languages. On bilingual sites, the Arabic page should carry Arabic markup that matches the Arabic content, not a copy of the English block.
  5. Test and monitor. Validate with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator, then watch the enhancement reports in Search Console for new errors.

What are the most common schema mistakes?

The most damaging mistake is markup that does not match the visible page, such as prices, reviews or FAQs that exist only in the code. Google treats this as spammy structured data and can apply a manual action. Other frequent problems:

  • Several plugins each adding their own Organization markup, with conflicting names or logos.
  • LocalBusiness markup on every page listing a head-office address when the business has several branches.
  • Out-of-date prices and opening hours, especially after Ramadan hours change.
  • Markup copied from a template with placeholder values never replaced.
  • Phone numbers formatted inconsistently across schema, Google Business Profile and directories.

Schema does not guarantee that ChatGPT, Gemini or AI Overviews will mention you. What it does is make the facts about your business consistent and machine-readable, which supports the wider work of establishing your brand as a clear entity. That work is covered in our guide to entity SEO and the knowledge graph.

Combined with plain, well-structured answers on the page, which is the heart of answer engine optimisation, structured data gives search and AI systems fewer reasons to get your details wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Does schema markup improve Google rankings?

Not directly. Google has said structured data is not a general ranking factor. It helps Google understand what a page is about and can make the page eligible for rich results, such as product prices or breadcrumbs, which may improve how many people click. Treat it as a way to be understood and displayed well, alongside strong content and technical foundations.

Is JSON-LD better than microdata?

For most websites, yes. Google supports JSON-LD, microdata and RDFa, but recommends JSON-LD because it sits in one block separate from the visible HTML. That makes it easier to generate from a database, update and debug without touching page layout. Microdata is still valid if your platform already outputs it correctly, but new builds should normally use JSON-LD.

Which schema type should a clinic in Dubai use?

A clinic should normally use a relevant LocalBusiness subtype such as MedicalClinic or Dentist for each branch, with address, phone, hours and geo-coordinates. Add Organization markup for the brand, Person markup on doctor profile pages, BreadcrumbList site-wide and Article markup on health content. Make sure every marked-up claim matches the page and complies with healthcare advertising rules.

How can I check if my website has schema markup?

Enter a page URL into Google's Rich Results Test to see which structured data Google detects and whether it qualifies for rich results. The Schema Markup Validator shows all Schema.org types, including ones without rich results. In Google Search Console, the Enhancements section reports errors and warnings for supported types across your whole site.
