SEO, AEO and GEO: how UAE businesses get found in search and AI answers

Customers now ask Google, ChatGPT and Gemini for recommendations. What SEO, AEO and GEO each do, and how they work together.

SEO, AEO and GEO: how UAE businesses get found in search and AI answers: Upscaleads guide
Quick answer

SEO helps your website rank in search results. AEO shapes your content so it is chosen as the direct answer in snippets, AI Overviews and voice results. GEO helps AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini understand and cite your business accurately. They share one foundation: a technically sound, clear and trustworthy website.

Key takeaways

  • SEO is still the foundation: AI answers draw on pages search engines already trust.
  • AEO means answering real customer questions in the first sentence under clear headings.
  • GEO depends on consistent business details and genuine third-party mentions across the web.
  • One well-structured service page can serve SEO, AEO and GEO at the same time.
  • Start with an audit, including asking AI assistants how they describe your business.

A customer in Dubai looking for a dental clinic, a fit-out contractor or an accounting firm no longer relies on a single Google search. They might type a query into Google, read the AI Overview at the top, then ask ChatGPT or Gemini to compare three options, and finally message the winner on WhatsApp. Each of those moments is a chance to be seen, or to be missed.

That is why three disciplines now sit side by side: search engine optimisation (SEO), answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO). They share most of their foundations, but each has a distinct job. Understanding the difference helps you spend your budget on the work that actually moves visibility.

What is SEO, and is it still the foundation?

Yes. SEO is the practice of making your website rank in traditional search results, and it remains the base that AEO and GEO build on. Answer features and AI tools draw heavily on pages that search engines can already crawl, understand and trust.

SEO work falls into four areas:

  • Technical health: fast loading on mobile, clean crawlable URLs, an XML sitemap, correct canonical tags and no broken pages.
  • On-page relevance: title tags, headings and content that match what people search for, including English, Arabic and mixed queries.
  • Authority: links and mentions from credible, relevant websites.
  • Local SEO: a complete Google Business Profile and consistent details for businesses serving Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or specific neighbourhoods.

If these basics are weak, no amount of AEO or GEO work will compensate. Our guide to SEO for UAE businesses covers the fundamentals in more detail.

What is AEO?

AEO is the work of shaping your content so search engines and assistants select it as the direct answer to a question. The targets are featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, AI Overviews and voice assistant responses.

Where SEO asks "which keywords should this page rank for?", AEO asks "which exact questions does this page answer, and is each answer easy to extract?" In practice that means:

  1. Collecting the real questions customers ask your sales team, on WhatsApp and in reviews.
  2. Using those questions as headings, phrased the way people type or speak them.
  3. Answering in the first one or two sentences under each heading, then adding detail.
  4. Using lists, steps and tables where the answer is naturally structured.
  5. Adding FAQ sections and matching structured data where appropriate.

A clinic page that opens with three paragraphs about its history, then mentions opening hours at the bottom, is hard for an answer engine to use. A page that states "We are open Saturday to Thursday, 9am to 9pm, in Al Barsha" in plain words is easy.

What is GEO?

GEO is about how generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot understand, describe and recommend your business when they write an answer. These systems assemble responses from many sources, so they need to recognise your brand as a clear entity with a consistent story.

GEO work typically includes:

  • Consistent name, address, phone number, services and service areas across your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
  • Organisation, LocalBusiness and Service structured data that states who you are and what you do.
  • Clear, specific service descriptions rather than vague claims such as "leading solutions provider".
  • Genuine mentions on trusted third-party sites: industry publications, local media, associations and reputable directories.
  • Factual, quotable content that AI tools can cite with confidence.

GEO is newer and harder to measure than SEO, and nobody can control exactly what an AI model says. What you can do is make accurate information about your business easy to find and consistent everywhere it appears.

How are SEO, AEO and GEO different?

They differ mainly in the outcome they target and the signals they rely on. The table below summarises the practical differences.

How do they work together on one page?

A single well-built service page can serve all three at once. You do not need separate content for each discipline, just content built with all three in mind.

Take a service page for an AC maintenance company in Sharjah:

  • For SEO: a descriptive H1, a unique title tag, fast mobile loading and internal links from related pages.
  • For AEO: headings such as "How often should AC be serviced in the UAE?" answered in the first sentence, plus a short FAQ.
  • For GEO: the business name, service areas, licence type and contact details stated clearly and matching the Google Business Profile, backed by structured data.

Bilingual sites need extra care. If you publish in Arabic, the Arabic pages should be properly written for Arabic searchers, not machine-translated, and linked to their English equivalents with hreflang tags.

Where should a UAE business start?

Start with an audit that covers all three areas, then fix the foundations before chasing AI visibility. A simple sequence looks like this.

Step 1: check your technical SEO

Run your key pages through PageSpeed Insights, check Google Search Console for indexing errors, and confirm your site works well on a phone. Most UAE traffic is mobile, so a slow mobile experience costs you in every channel.

Step 2: list your customers' questions

Ask your sales and customer service teams for the ten questions they hear most. Check your WhatsApp chats and Google reviews. These become headings and FAQs.

Step 3: see how AI describes you

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity about your business and your main services in your city. Note what is missing, outdated or wrong. Those gaps usually trace back to inconsistent or thin information online.

Step 4: fix consistency and structure

Align your business details everywhere, add structured data, and rewrite key pages so each question is answered clearly near the top.

Step 5: measure and repeat

Track organic traffic and leads in Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, and watch for referral traffic from AI tools. Our article on measuring traffic and leads from AI search explains how to set this up.

How long before you see results?

Technical fixes and clearer answers can show effects within weeks once pages are recrawled, while authority and AI visibility usually build over several months. Timelines depend on your competition, your site's history and how much content needs work.

Be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed rankings or guaranteed mentions in ChatGPT. Search engines and AI models make their own decisions. Good work improves your odds; it does not buy a fixed position.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need separate agencies for SEO, AEO and GEO?

Not usually. The three disciplines share the same foundations: technical health, clear content and consistent business information. Splitting them across providers often creates conflicting changes to the same pages. It is generally more efficient to have one team plan them together, with specialist input where needed, such as Arabic content or structured data.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT or Gemini answers?

There is no way to buy a guaranteed mention in the organic answers that AI assistants generate. Some AI platforms are testing or introducing advertising, but that is separate from being cited in answers. Organic visibility comes from accurate, consistent and well-structured information about your business, supported by credible mentions on other websites.

Does AEO work for Arabic searches?

Yes. The same principles apply: identify the questions Arabic-speaking customers ask, use them as headings and answer them clearly and directly. The content should be written natively in Arabic rather than machine-translated, and bilingual pages should be linked with hreflang tags so search engines show the right language version.

How do I know if AI tools are sending me traffic?

In Google Analytics 4, check referral traffic from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Not every AI-driven visit is labelled, because some users copy a name and search it later. Asking new leads how they found you, including on WhatsApp, fills part of that gap.
